Craters of the Moon Guide
Walk on a Geothermal Wonderland: Craters of the Moon Guide
Step into a surreal landscape at Craters of the Moon, a geothermal area just north of Taupo. This active geothermal field offers a fascinating glimpse into New Zealand's volcanic heart. Prepare to be amazed by steaming vents, bubbling mud pools, and colorful, otherworldly terrain. It's a truly unique experience that showcases the raw power and beauty of nature. Craters of the Moon was formed in the 1950s when the Wairakei Geothermal Power Station was built. The extraction of geothermal fluid lowered the underground water level, creating the dramatic landscape we see today. The area was initially barren and unattractive, but over time, native vegetation has begun to reclaim the land, adding a touch of green to the stark geothermal features. Visitors can explore Craters of the Moon via well-maintained walking tracks. Choose from shorter loops for a quick overview or longer trails that delve deeper into the geothermal area. Be sure to take your time and observe the various geothermal features, from the hissing steam vents to the bubbling mud pools. The elevated viewing platforms provide excellent vantage points for capturing stunning photos of the landscape. Remember to stay on the marked paths and heed all safety warnings, as the ground can be unstable and the steam can be very hot.
